Tell us a bit about yourself? What you’re taking in school, intern position, etc.
Currently, I am a fourth year student in the Bachelor of Management and Organization Studies program – with an Honours Specialization in Human Resources, at King’s. Given my field of study, it is only fitting that I am the HR intern for the USC. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had here at the USC, learning from a great team while being able to gain valuable experience.
How did you first become involved with the USC/First role with the USC?
I’ve always taken advantage of the services and venues supported through the USC. However, this is my first formal role as the human resources intern. Prior to this, I was fortunate to have been involved in Western’s internship program where I was able to work as a HR intern for Pratt & Whitney last year. When that internship came to an end, I stumbled upon this opportunity on the USC’s website. I was excited at the thought that I could use what I had learned and apply it to the university context. Being able to complete my final academic year while also working at the USC is an experience I am truly grateful for.
What other positions have you been or are currently involved in?
Currently, I am a King’s soph. One of my primary responsibilities in this role is to encourage first year students to fully embrace the university experience. I am also a mentor for the King’s Academic Mentoring Program (KAMP), where I provide academic and social support to incoming students. Through the Student Success Centre, I act as one of Western’s ambassadors for the Student 2 Business networking conference, which takes place on March 2, 2016. This is a great opportunity for students to network with business and community representatives from the city of London. At the heart of all these positions is the idea of reaching out to students to encourage participation and involvement and I think the USC is a great outlet for students to be able to do just that.
What have you learned as a result of your involvement with the USC?
The AVP and Intern program has provided me the opportunity to hone my skills in effective communication, time management, problem-solving, and collaboration. I greatly appreciate the convenience of working on campus within flexible timelines. My team has been very good at offering me chances to take the lead in various projects, always looking for ways to maximize and enhance my learning. My USC experience reinforces my strong passion in supporting organizations through strategic human resources planning. I am excited about moving forward in my role as the HR intern for the remainder of the year.
UPDATE: After completing her education at Western University, Joanna has gone on to become an Associated at PWC Canada. Way to go, JOANNA!
